Climate Action Engagement Officer

We are recruiting for a new person to join our small but dedicated team on a part-time basis. This role will involve working closely with the charity’s Founder to deliver Sussex Green Living’s goals and objectives.
Background
Sussex Green Living (SGL) is a small, successful, multi-award winning, environmental charity with a primary aim to inform, influence and engage individuals and communities to take action on the climate and ecological emergency. Currently operating with one full-time and one part-time staff, supported by around 120 volunteers, and a portfolio of external providers who deliver a range of skills and services, the potential to grow is enormous and there is always lots to do.
The ideal candidate is someone who is committed to working with others to help deliver community engagement relating to reducing climate emissions and protecting our natural world. The successful individual will need to be self-motivated, very organised with excellent time management, be proficient using digital media platforms, able to write compelling copy for newsletters, but be equally happy managing a CRM database, tracking the fundraising pipeline, managing data for evaluation, writing reports, supporting partnership proposals, and liaising with volunteers, so a creative approach to prioritising competing demands is definitely needed.
Essential Experience
- Excellent planning and organisational skills
- Delivery of marketing campaigns using digital communication tools and techniques – researching, copywriting and editing content for social media, publications, websites, newsletters and public information material
- CRM system managing donor pipelines and on line media scheduling
- Planning and delivering community scale events and PR activity
- Monitoring, collating and evaluating online statistics, data management and information reports with feedback for future activities
- Excellent interpersonal skills working alongside a diverse range of people at all levels.
- A flexible approach being able to adapt to changing priorities whilst managing a busy workload.
- High level proficiency in MS platforms (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), plus Canva, Mailchimp and G-Suite
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Knowledge of community climate action, climate justice, or the ecological emergency
- Experience of project and budget management.
- Flexibility to work occasional weekends by arrangement.

The Purpose of the Job Role
To work closely with the Sussex Green Living (SGL) Founder and undertake a wide range of tasks associated with the delivery of educational and engagement activities, inspiring action for small green steps that address the climate and ecological emergency.
The Climate Action Engagement Officer’s responsibility is to raise awareness and expand the reach of SGL initiatives through successful online marketing, communications and PR. Providing reports, analysis, and statistics as required by SGL’s Board of Trustees, the CEO, or external stakeholders, to shape the future direction of the charity.
Working in collaboration with others, take a supporting role in the successful delivery of the monthly Saturday Sussex Green Hub in Horsham, West Sussex. As a long-standing community initiative, this involves regular liaison with Volunteer Leads, helping to secure resources, and responding to requests that will deepen engagement of both volunteers and audiences.
Drawing on experience of planning and evaluating marketing and PR, make recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of SGL communication activities, in particular, to attract potential funders (government and business) and generate individual giving donations.
Priority Focus Areas
Website
- Keep the SGL website fresh, updating event pages, blog posts, and campaign themes and content
- Develop the user e-Experience with technical support from SGL’s external provider as needed
- Monitor web traffic, provide monthly reports and make recommendations for content review
Social Media:
- Using the Communications Strategy 2025 – plan, write, and schedule posts schedule for Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to increase audience reach and engagement
- Edit photographs, and create eye-catching graphics and posts using Canva, aligned to the SGL brand template
- Monitor and evaluate posts to ensure they work to engage new audiences, provide monthly reports and make recommendations for content review
Newsletters
- Write themed content, aligned to the Communication Strategy 2025 (currently using Mailchimp) requiring specific comms for volunteers, general public and educators in schools, and business prospects.
PR
- Write and share press articles with local, regional and online publications.
- Build relationships with journalists and editors to positively influence SGL’s profile.
- Liaise with SGL volunteer teams and support resource requests
- Track where SGL is featured and source what it’s worth in ‘advertising’ value.
Event Management
- Support the delivery of SGL experiences that connect with the audiences in meaningful ways
- Utilise appropriate tools to track budget and engagement for enhanced RoI
Additional Areas of contribution
- Assist in recruiting and supporting volunteers to take part in SGL initiatives
- Full compliance with SGL administrative obligations as a UK registered charity
- Participate in SGL partner meetings & events as required
- Project tasks as requested by the CEO and Chairperson
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Contracted Hours of Work
25 hours a week Monday to Friday – with potential to expand to full time role.
Occasional weekend work may be requested.
Salary & Benefits
£13.50 per hour £17,550 pro rata £35,000 pa.
4% employer pension contribution
Annual leave entitlement 21 days per annum plus UK bank holidays
Maternity or Paternity leave as per statutory regulations
Location
Remote – work from home – attendance at regular meetings as required –
Recruitment Criteria
As part of the recruitment process, the successful candidate will undergo a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service). References will also be required.
