Shipley Community Hub: At the Heart of a Village

January 2, 2024/in Eco News/by Marianne Lindfield

Shipley Community Hub: At the Heart of a Village.  A group that started off due to a request for a local Bridge Club has grown into a real community centre!  Thanks to a single person, making one small suggestion, the wonderful Shipley Community Hub now sits at the heart of the village.

It offers not only somewhere for playing bridge but encompasses all sorts  to join in with!  They host monthly talks with themes that cover a wide range of subjects from bees to space missions.

The Shipley Hub welcomes anyone who wants to come along and it’s free to simply drop in once a month at the Andrew Hall, Shipley on the first Tuesday from 11am – 3pm.  Come to meet new friends, learn about new things and be part of projects  to support the community.

The Community Hub ticks boxes on so many levels: friendship, wellbeing, recycling, education and with such tremendous support from so many people and local businesses, it continues to find its place and become what people in the community want and need.

The first project undertaken was to supply Shipley with a defibrillator and free training for anyone who wants it, all thanks to local businessman, Tim Mordant at Platinum Ambulance.   Next we set about turning an unused area at the back of Andrew Hall into a natural bio-diverse rich space for people to enjoy.

We’ve been able to spread the word with sponsorship from Bryan at FinePRINT  and with a TerraCycle point for hard-to -ecycle plastics, an eco-refill station run by Jozef of Plastic Free Refills and a repair cafe sponsored by Knepp Castle Estate (who kindly lend us their Maintenance Manager, Matthew Morgan) we offer something for everyone, even cakes, kindly donated by members of the community and other refreshments sponsored by Buck Barn Co-Op.  The donations for refreshments go towards the future of the hub and help fund our projects.

So, whether it’s a bit of company, the monthly topic, a repair or refill that you’re after, pop along to The Shipley Community Hub any first Tuesday from 11am.

By Sarah Cuthbertson, Founder, Shipley Community Hub

Want a repair hub in your village?  See if there’s one in your area here:  There are around 20 locally now and we’d love to help you set one up in your area too!
