Horsham families win green family National Awards

Horsham families are at the forefront of the fight against climate change and have been recognised with a National Award. Carrie Cort, her 9 year old son Adam and her Mother, Jean Francis went to collect the award for their family’s efforts at the P.E.A. Awards in London on Friday 13 October. Horsham Repair Cafe an outstanding success

The first session of the new Horsham Repair Café on Saturday 7th October proved an outstanding success.  At 10am approximately 50 people came through the doors of the Horsham Quaker Meeting House to witness the official opening by Jeremy Quin MP and Councilor Philip Circus, who spoke about the importance of this initiative for Horsham District. The Future We Want – LESS C02 campaign was launched by Sussex Green Living in June 2017 at the Billingshurst Carnival.  This programme was developed as a result of Al Gore’s Climate Reality Leadership Corp training (more information below) and a WWF competition. In March 2017 Carrie, the founder of Sussex Green Living, was shortlisted as the WWF Earth Hour Community Hero. At the same WWF Earth Hour Parliamentary reception, Adam her 9 year old son was announced as a winner in the WWF KS2 The Future We Want – Climate Challenge poster competition, with his Climate Cartoon.

Carrie and Adam decided that they need to give future generations the knowledge and a voice to encourage everyone to care better for the planet which sustains us. Read more

What is climate change?

To understand climate change, it is best to first define climate. The climate of an area or region refers to the typical or average weather. For example, the climate of Hawaii is sunny and warm. When you hear about climate change, this is describing a change in the climate of an area, such as temperature, precipitation, or wind patterns that occur over several decades or longer. Mother and son acknowledged at Climate Awards

A mother and son from Sussex were both acknowledged for their inspirational environmental work at the WWF Earth Hour Parliamentary Reception at the Palace of Westminster on 28th February.

Carrie Cort was shortlisted for the WWF Community Hero Award for climate justice work within her community, whilst her nine-year old son Adam won the KS2 WWF Climate Challenge ‘The Future We Want’ poster competition. Read more

Green careers stand launched

Our new Green careers stand is going to the ‘Big Bang South East’ event at the South of England Showground, Ardingly on 28th June. The event aims to encourage young people aged 9 – 19 years to take up science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), and brings those subjects to life. The Big Bang normally attracts about 7,500 young people and their teachers. You can learn more about the Big Bang events here.

Al Gore Climate Reality Talks in West Sussex

Al Gore’s powerful Climate Reality presentation is available in West Sussex…… This March Carrie was invited to be trained by Al Gore former US Vice President, leading climate change scientists and climate change communicators in Manila, Philippines on a three day training programme. There were 700 other passionate environmental communicators from 33 different countries on this programme and there are over 10,000 Climate Reality Leaders now trained worldwide. Over the coming months Carrie Cort, winner of the BBC Surrey and Sussex Community Hero, Green Champion Award will share Al Gore’s Climate Reality presentation with the people of West Sussex.   Read more

Climate change and its effect on the poor

Some say “think global but act local” because the idea of acting local is much easier for people to embrace. But something recently happened in my life which made me question these words.

Following a recent visit to Manila, Philippines, for Al Gore’s Climate Reality Leadership Corp training programme and to the poorest community in Manila, this is what I believe: We need to ‘think global and act global,’ because wherever we are in the world, our actions –  good or bad – have a knock on effect which ripples around the globe.
