The amazing butterflies, bats, birds and bees of the South Downs National Park are the focus of a new thought-provoking digital exhibition of poetry, stories, film and spoken words.
Species Stories is a fascinating creative exploration of the National Park’s most recognisable wildlife, bringing to life people’s reflections, feelings and imaginations. The collection has been produced by talented writers and artists from Black and ethnically diverse backgrounds, as well as children and young people from across the National Park. The free exhibition has been produced in partnership with Brighton-based arts and heritage organisation Writing Our Legacy, the South Downs National Park Trust and the Foyle Foundation. Read more
What if, before replacing something that stops working, we asked: Can it be repaired?
Repair does not have to mean being an expert with a toolbox. It can mean finding out whether something can be fixed before buying a replacement, learning a simple skill, asking someone with experience for help or visiting a local Repair Café.
Sussex is fortunate to have a community of volunteers making this possible. Sussex Green Living launched West Sussex’s first Repair Café in Horsham in 2017 and has supported the development of many others. There are now 19 in West Sussex bring people together to share practical knowledge and give broken household items another chance. Read more
Early August brought an unexpected setback for Sussex Green Living when its iconic electric Eco Float broke down. After a complex recovery, the float was finally towed onto a trailer and taken to The Milk Float Company in nearby Alford, where Len – who has spent his life maintaining and rebuilding milk floats – was able to assess the problem. His prognosis was clear: the Eco Float needed a new control panel and accelerator, at a cost of £1,550.
For a small charity, an unexpected repair bill of this size could have been a major obstacle. But what happened next was a powerful reminder of the value of local community support. Read more
At Sussex Green Living, we are delighted and honoured to have been recognised at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) National Bees Needs Champions Awards at RHS Wisley on 14 July. Our Pollination Education Station (PES) Trail across Sussex received national recognition for its contribution to supporting pollinators and educating communities about the vital role they play in our environment. Sadly, of the UK’s 59 butterfly species, 33 have been in decline in recent years, with favourites like the once common Small Tortoiseshell on the brink of disappearing altogether in parts of southeast England. But there are lots of ways we can all help our butterflies thrive. You can get involved by volunteering with a local conservation group such as Wild About Warnham, or your local branch of Butterfly Conservation. We’ve been allocated one charity place in the 2027 TCS London Marathon for the event taking place on Saturday, 24th April. We’re looking for a runner who is passionate about making a difference for our local environment and communities, will enjoy being an ambassador for Sussex Green Living and is confident they can raise a minimum of £1,800 through sponsorship.
Community in Henfield united to watch the People’s Emergency Briefing a public information film that clearly and honestly briefs the UK on the climate and nature crisis. Building on the landmark National Emergency Briefing (NEB) held in Westminster, the film features event footage with reactions from members of the public and some familiar faces. The film was shown in Henfield last Sunday and it’s designed to be followed by structured discussion, to allow people to process what they have heard and find ways to engage positively around local community solutions. It is not party political in any way but it is relevant to everyone.
In attendance were local residents of all ages, Councillors, the Parish Council Clerk and the local vicar.
This May 2026, an empty retail unit in Swan Walk Shopping Centre has been transformed into a vibrant community hub—demonstrating the power of collaboration to support both people and planet.
In an inspiring joint initiative, Men’s Shed Horsham and Sussex Green Living have come together to launch a month-long pop-up shop focused on wellbeing, sustainability, and community connection. They are joined by Menshare and SEN Shed, creating a diverse and inclusive programme of activities across the week. Read more
Following a competitive application process, Sussex Green Living has been selected to take part in the Big Give Earth Raise—a national match-funding campaign launching on Earth Day 22 April.
From noon Wednesday 22 April to noon Wednesday 29 April every donation made through the campaign will be matched, meaning a £50 donation becomes £100 to support the charity’s work across Sussex.
Run by Big Give, the campaign brings together philanthropists, foundations, and businesses to match public donations. Over the years, Big Give has raised approximately £427 million for thousands of charities. NOTE: 30th April – WE ACHIEVED OUR TARGET!
