New youth project highlights care for local ecology in Westergate

Students from Ormiston Six Village Academy have unveiled a massive (40m) new mural along with dynamic new signs for local bins, as part of a project they have designed to increase respect for the natural world in their area.

Developed with input from the whole school community, the project supported a number of students in Years 8 – 10 to work with two commissioned artists – selected by them – to create art interventions in the school’s local Westergate village intended to inspire greater respect for the natural world locally. At Sussex Green Living, we are delighted and honoured to have been recognised at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) National Bees Needs Champions Awards at RHS Wisley on 14 July. Our Pollination Education Station (PES) Trail across Sussex received national recognition for its contribution to supporting pollinators and educating communities about the vital role they play in our environment.  Read more

The second Horsham screening of the ‘PEB’ film is at Brighton Road Baptist Church on 26th June and the event is being supported by multiple local groups including Transition Horsham, MP Watch Horsham, Horsham Eco Churches and Sussex Green Living.  Read more

Citizen science helps dolphins thrive

How many dolphins did you see today? Did you know we’ve got populations of iconic megafauna including porpoises, dolphins and whales all along our Sussex coast? To find out more, and how to help them, I went to meet Thea Taylor, Managing Director of the Sussex Dolphin Project. 

Thea is passionate for all things cetacean “Marine mammals, dolphins in particular, are incredibly charismatic. They have spectacular behaviour and they’re vital parts of our ecosystem. The Sussex Coastline is underappreciated when it comes to public perception of what’s out there. We want to reconnect people to the sea and encourage them to protect their local wildlife from the many pressures it faces.” she explains.  Read more
