Zero Waste Shops

Often the first place we focus with waste reduction is recycling. Yet 38% of packaging in the average shopping basket can’t be recycled, it might be incinerated to create energy, but that’s not good.  Recycling uses a lot of energy in the transportation and making into new products and lots of plastics can only be recycled once before they are no longer fit-for-purpose. It is time to shift the focus to refilling as an alternative to recycling, or purchasing concentrates like bare bars which are lighter to transport and have less or no packaging.

Refills – Did you know that reusing and refilling your bottles saves 70% Co2, 65% energy and 45% water rather than buying a completely new product?

Dry/concentrates/bare bars – reduces the water content by about 80%, making products lighter to transport, reducing energy use, CO2 and packaging. You add the water at home.

Mini Zero Waste Shop @ Sussex Green Hub

We sell bare bars, concentrated shampoo, conditioner, kitchen cleaning bars, laundry sheets, Overherd oat m*lk powder and a personal and household cleaning product bottle refill service at the Sussex Green Hub on the last Saturday of every month. You bring your empty bottle and we fill it, you just pay for the liquid, it’s simple as that!

Whatever you are looking to clean in your home (household or personal hygiene), we have a great eco range to choose from, and three main suppliers mean that we cover virtually all your household requirements in an eco friendly product! Bio D, Ecoleaf and Faith in Nature are all great environmentally sound products with the added benefit that they work brilliantly too.

Did you know that refills are cheaper than buying a brand new bottle?

Refills are cheaper because you don’t have to pay the cost of a new bottle. We buy in bulk to keep our costs down so you save on the ‘ingredients’ too!

For example, if you refill your own 400ml bottle with Faith In Nature shampoo or conditioner it will cost you £3.88, a new bottle and product will cost approx £6.50.

Due to cost increases across the market, refills are becoming more and more competitive and are normally well below commercial supermarket price.

Refill and Zero Waste Shops

What is a zero waste shop? Simple a shop which purchases products in bulk, then sells as a refill service (customer using their own container) or offering products with less or recyclable packaging and planet friendly products. Any bulk food not sold by near its use by dates must have a destination (going to food banks or into composts, for example). A zero waste shop enables customers to live a more zero waste lifestyle through eliminating packaging and encouraging the use of containers from home to fill …Note some of these shops offer just a bottle refill service, not the full zero waste service. If you know of others not on our list please use our contact page to tell us about them, so we can add them to our site.
