Use Your Voice

We are in a climate and ecological emergency and we need to act now. We can all take action and make changes in our own life to protect the planet but we need the support of businesses and governments to drive change.

We all have a voice and we can use it to ask to change from local authorities, MPs and organisations. Share your concerns with your local councillors and MPs, and ask specifically what they are doing to drive change and protect the planet. If you have a specific local issue you want them to address, write to them and tell them what you would like them to do on your behalf.

Local Elections – May 2023

On 4th May 2023, there are local elections being held in 46 councils across the South East. With the upheavals in national politics, the outcome of local elections is even more unpredictable than usual.

The dangers of the climate crisis have become more evident with huge floods in Pakistan and wildfires in the Med alongside the obvious fragility of our supplies of fossil fuels. We need to keep up the momentum and pressure for urgent climate and nature action in our local areas.

Climate and Nature Pledge

Although climate action is now a priority for many voters, it still doesn’t get the election air time it deserves. The South East Climate Alliance (SECA) are running a campaign – The Climate and Nature Pledge – which aims to do something about that!

By signing the pledge candidates are agreeing, if elected, to press their council to:

  • Accelerate action
  • Boost partnerships
  • Communicate
  • Divest from fossil fuels

Take Action

Contact your local MP

Tell your Member of Parliament and local councillors that you think action on climate change is important. A prosperous future for the UK depends on their decisions about the environment, green spaces, roads, cycling infrastructure, waste and recycling, air quality and energy efficient homes. Ultimately, steps to reduce carbon emissions will have a positive impact on other local issues, like improving air quality and public health, creating jobs and reducing inequality.  Find out who your MP is, and the best way to contact them.

Try our Green Ideas

We have lots of ideas and initiatives you can take to on your journey to zero waste that will have a positive impact on the planet. Check out our Green Ideas to get you started or download our action plans from our resource section.

Tell your Friends and Family

As you make changes to reduce your environmental impact, share your experience with your family and friends about what has worked for you. Many people don’t want to talk about climate change as it can lead to anxiety but sharing positive stories can be beneficial, spark optimism and drive change.
