A Greener Spring Clean: Why Charity Recycling Beats Mining Finite Resources

April 13, 2026/in Recycling, Take Action/by Marianne Lindfield

As spring approaches, many of us feel the urge to refresh our homes, clear out clutter, and start anew. But this year, there’s an opportunity to make your spring clean go beyond your home—and benefit the planet too. By decluttering old and unused technology, you can help reduce environmental damage while raising funds for charity.

We all have them: forgotten mobile phones tucked away in drawers, outdated cameras gathering dust, or tangled chargers and gadgets hiding in cupboards. What may seem like harmless clutter actually represents a much bigger environmental issue. Your mobile phone alone contains precious, finite materials such as copper, lithium, cobalt, manganese, tungsten, and tellurium. These resources are extracted through mining processes that can lead to deforestation, habitat destruction, and significant carbon emissions.

At the same time, holding onto unused tech doesn’t just impact the environment—it can also affect your wellbeing. Studies have shown that decluttering can significantly improve mental health. Clearing out unused items reduces stress levels, boosts mood through physical activity, and creates a more organised, calming living space. A tidy home can lead to better focus, improved sleep, and a greater sense of control.

That’s why Sussex Green Living is encouraging people to focus their spring clean on old tech and overlooked valuables. By donating these items, you’re not only freeing up space in your home—you’re also helping to put valuable materials back into the circular economy and supporting environmental education in local schools.

Items that can be donated include:

  • Mobile phones (working or broken, any age)
  • Cameras (film, digital, and video)
  • Gadgets such as sat-navs, MP3 players, iPods, games consoles, games, and accessories
  • Jewellery and watches (any material, even broken)
  • Currency (UK and foreign, including out-of-circulation coins and notes)
  • Stamps (loose, albums, first day covers, presentation packs)

Before donating, it’s important to protect your personal data. Make sure to remove any SIM or memory cards and perform a factory reset on your device. This ensures your information remains secure while allowing your old tech to have a new purpose.

Donations can be made at a range of local face-to-face drop-off locations in Horsham, Amberley, Arundel, Partridge Green, Slinfold, Storrington, Southwater or Thakeham. Or items can be sent directly via post to Recycling for Good Causes, Sussex Green Living marked as the beneficiary.  Learn more here: https://tinyurl.com/mr3ba5uf

The shift toward a circular economy—where materials are reused, repaired, and recycled—is essential in reducing our reliance on mining and preventing further environmental degradation. By rethinking what we consider “waste,” we can reduce pressure on the planet’s natural resources and take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future.

So this spring, don’t just clean your home—make a difference. Turn your clutter into climate action and help create a greener, healthier world for everyone.
