Caring for clothes & planet events

During the first half of 2019 Sussex Green Living and the Horsham Repair Cafe are out and about, inpiring people to ‘make do and mend’, remake, repair, repatch and basically love the clothes and materials around them. Come and learn long lost skills of sewing, patches, repairing buttons, clothes etc. Learn about fast fashion and the damage it is causing our planet, solutions, ways of saving money and the planet……

2nd (10-4pm) and 3rd March (10-3pm) Horsham Repair Cafe and Sussex Green Living are at the Kinder Living Home Show, County Hall, North Horsham, Park Street, Horsham, RH12 1XH. The event aims to encourage more sustainable choices in our homes, gardens and daily lives. We will be offering repairs to electrical household items and clothes and clothes swapping. Teaching people to knit in the ocean themed knit and natter area. Plus our ‘Love your clothes and planet’ static display, highlighting sustainable and ethical clothes, less sustainable clothes, the environmental problems of synthetic material and tips for clothes care to reduce their environmental impact. 5th March 10-3pm Community Eco Ocean Art project at C&H Fabric, Horsham. We are inviting people of all ages to get creative around the subject of plastic and our oceans. Teaching people how to knit, crochet and use unwanted materials to make fish and sealife, for our Community Eco Ocean Art Project, part of the Horsham District Year of Culture. 15th March 10-3pm Make Do and Mend sesson at C&H Fabric, Horsham. Teaching people the long lost skills of sewing, patching clothes, replacing buttons, taking up a hem, or just get creative with repairs and textiles. Learn more about C&H Fabric ‘Make it March’ here.

16-22nd March Community Eco Ocean Art display in Horsham Library – Showing people beautiful knitted, crocheted and upcycled fish and sealife, for our Community Eco Ocean Art Project, part of the Horsham District Year of Culture. Encouraging participation and promoting the Share, Care & Repair Fair. Learn more about the project here.

6th April 1.30-4.30pm – Horsham Repair Café at the Quaker Meeting House: Teaching textile repairs, learn how to knit and make do and mend. *10-1pm electrical repairs, refills and energy switching.

4th May 1.30-4.30pm – Horsham Repair Café at the Quaker Meeting House: Learn how to repair, remake and restyle clothes also learn to knit *.

5-6th May Good Life Weald & Downland Museum we will be in the Repair Cafe marquee with three displays: ‘Make Do and Mend’, ‘Knitting and Textile Ocean Art’ and ‘Sustainable Fashion’, plus ‘knitting and nattering’.

1-2nd June Floral Fringe selling upcycled clothes, bags and cushions made out of neckties and other upcycled goods.

1-6th June Share, Care and Repair Fair display in Horsham Library – promoting the Fair, will include the ‘Make Do and Mend’ display and Community Eco Ocean Art, promoting SGL and the HRC sustainable solutions.

8th June Sustainability event at the Blue Idol in Coneyhurst – we will have on display our ‘Make Do and Mend’, ‘Knitting and Textile Ocean Art’ and ‘Sustainable Fashion’.

30th June – Billingshurst Carnival procession and stand at Billingshurst Show. Anyone interested in joining our greener living carnival procession (walkers with banners, cyclists and EV cars) please contact us.

29th June – 6th July – Ocean Bomb week!  People will be installing surprise Community Eco Ocean Art in shops, streets, schools mainly in Horsham District to help communicate about ocean pollution and the importance of reduce, reuse and recycling plastics. These community art installations and the associated community message will be shared with the World in the social media #oceanbombed.  Learn more here.

6th July – Share, Care & Repair Fair in Horsham Market. We will be offering repairs to electrical household items, laptops, mobile phones and clothes.  Our ‘Love your clothes and planet’ static display, highlighting sustainable and ethical clothes, less sustainable clothes, the environmental problems of synthetic material and tips for clothes care to reduce their environmental impact. There will be a Vintage Clothes stand, plastic free dry, loose and organic food and much more.  Learn more here.
