Raspberry Pi helping to save the planet!
We’re really excited to tell you about another sustainable solution for schools and this one might win your school £1,000!
Now in it’ sixth year, the PA’s Raspberry Pi competition 2018 is offering three £1,000 prizes for teams from primary and secondary schools, and sixth forms and colleges.
This year’s theme is Sustainability. The challenge is to use the Raspberry Pi – a credit-card-size yet highly capable computer – to invent something that will help ‘save the planet’.
Is your school or college up for the challenge?
The main threats to our planet centre around energy use, food production and scarcer resources. So the competition judges are looking for inventions that could help meet those challenges. Maybe a football that stores the energy created by every kick. Or a scanner that helps us cut food waste. Or a bin that automatically recycles paper.
All you need to do is form a team, register your team here and then wait to receive your box containing a Raspberry Pi, keyboard, cables and instructions. Then get inventing!
The competition is open to all schools and colleges in the UK and the closing date for entries is 5 March, 2018. To find out more visit http://www.paconsulting.com/events/raspberry-pi-competition/.
As part of our Sussex Green Living ‘The Future We Want – LESS C02 sustainable solutions for schools’ programme we are offering Sussex schools who enter this competition a FREE sustainability presentation. It will give very clear unbiased information on climate change – the reason why we all need to think about sustainability. It’s informative but optimistic and there is also a big emphasis on personal responsibility – choices to be made. We give out a flyer called ‘Pledges for the Planet’ so children and their parents can decide what, if anything, they are prepared to do.
So, to borrow from Simon Sinek, we give an illustration of the ‘why’ and then through the competition the children create the ‘what’ and the ‘how’. The imagery in our presentations underlines the urgency of the situation, which should increase motivation and participation in the project. Broaden the reach, increase depth, create lasting impact etc… So that even after the competition is over everyone will still be thinking about ways to live more sustainability.
In fact even if schools don’t participate in the competition we are offering to deliver an age appropriate whole school assembly and or lessons for year 4, 5 and or 6 through our ‘The Future We Want – LESS C02 programme, more information can be seen here.
